Agora staff picks: pets

Elisabeth Brockman

Growing up, I was the kid with all the cool pets. Dogs, cats, birds, lizards, fish, bunnies, and any other creature we found by the river or in the Michigan marsh. I don’t have pets of my own currently, but they have taught me much. As parents always say, “pets teach you responsibility.” But most importantly, having pets taught me how to love and care for something with different needs than my own. With that many pets, I had a companion for every activity. Dogs are down for any outdoor activity or car trip. Cats are lovely because they always know to stay with you to cuddle when you are sick. Hand-fed lovebirds eat breakfast with you and sit on the end of your pencil when writing an essay. I could not pick a favorite. As a young adult, looking after myself is hard enough, but I look forward to having pets once again.

I have a cat named BB. He’s about 10 years old. His hobbies include sitting on my keyboard when I’m trying to do homework, staring out the window, yelling at birds, and getting into places he shouldn’t. I taught him a few tricks, so he can high-five, sit, and do a spin, though he’ll only do them when he wants to.

Some people dress up their dogs and others dress up their guinea pigs. LeeRoy just turned 2 years old. I got him as a gift when I moved into my apartment about a year and a half ago. He is a very moody creature who loves to snack on any fruit or vegetable and snuggle.

Roman was my first adult pet and he isn’t my favorite but you can say he’s been loved the longest. Roman has severe allergies and asthma and requires special treatment on a daily basis. He is the most docile of the bunch. Mr. Pickles is my sweetest cat. You can find him on my lap, my feet, my head,  anywhere that would allow him to be cuddling me in some way. He loves to give nose kisses and the occasional drool from a good scratching. My Gypsy girl came with a story. She had travelled in the engine pan of a van for a 6 hour trip. She was found the next day terrified, covered in fleas and soot, and no bigger than the palm of my hand. After a phone call from my friend who helped retrieve her from the engine pan, I was on my way to bring this sweet baby home and get her back in better health. It wasn’t hard to come up with a name for my little traveler.

I have four pets. Two dogs, and two cats. My cats are named Kako and Tiger. As for dogs, I have a Bichon Frise and Cocker Spaniel mix named Lucy, and a Labradoodle named Moana. I spend so much time with my pets and see them as my best friends.
