Visiting artist to speak at MCCC

Artist Anna van Schaap.

On Oct. 24, artist Anna van Schaap will visit Monroe County Community College.

Van Schaap will speak about her paintings from 6 to 8 p.m. in the La-Z-Boy Atrium.

Her work combines elements of emotion with traditional portraits of the female body.

“By creating work about the female body, its power, its existence, and its degradation, along with ideas about identitiy [sic] and representation, I also examine the structures that dictate the roles of those bodies in the world,” van Schaap said in a statement.

“It’s about what it means on a deeper level to be a female artist painting a female body with all its layers, then adding elements of destruction overtop.”

Van Schaap’s art will be displayed in the Campbell Learning Resource Center Library from Oct. 24 through November.

Both the lecture and display are free of charge to the public.

Professor of Art Therese O’Halloran is coordinating the lecture and art display.

“She’s a very interesting person,” O’Halloran said of van Shaap.
