RCTC is here to help at MCCC

The Regional Computer Technology Center Lab (RCTC), located in room Z-258 of the La-Z-Boy Center.

Websites change, passwords need resetting and sometimes computers are just frustrating.

While Google can help solve many problems, it can’t assist with specific questions or accounts.

Karen Kuhl, the computer lab coordinator, said MCCC’s Regional Computer Technology Center (RCTC) and the Business Learning Lab (BLL) can help with specific questions about accounts.

Located in room Z-258 of the La-Z-Boy Center, the RCTC has 20 computers while the BLL, located in room 1 at the Whitman Center, contains 16.

The RCTC is open Monday through Thursday 8 a.m. to 8:30 p.m. and Friday 8 a.m. to noon.

The BLL is open Monday through Thursday 8 a.m. to 6 p.m.

Kuhl said the RCTC can assist with issues on software programs such as Adobe Photoshop, installing Office 365 on your device, and web-based systems such as Brightspace and WebPal.

Recently, the RCTC faced a new set of questions from students.

At the end of the summer, MCCC released a new website.

“We’ve had quite a few who needed help with that,” Kuhl said. “Especially the first couple days.”

The lab can also assist with setting up the header, footer and page numbering of essays and then assist with printing the assignment.

Janet Brant, a computer lab technician, said one problem the lab faces often is resetting passwords for students.

“They lock themselves out of their accounts,” Brant said.

While the assistance with problems is nice, having a problem isn’t required for a student to stop in at the lab.

Maria Laurell, a student on campus, needed to use a computer for an assignment.

“I’m taking a CIS class and I have a MacBook, so I wanted to make sure on everything, and I like to use their Windows computers,” Laurell said. “MacBooks don’t always have the same files.”

For some students like Jessica Collins, it’s about the atmosphere.

“I can focus easier here than at home, less distractions,” Collins said.

The RCTC also assists students and professors with a location to host proctored testing, placement testing and focused examination such as the ATI Test of Essential Academic Skills for the nursing program.

During the summer of 2020, the RCTC will be relocated to the renovated East/West Tech building, and will feature new equipment as well as a place for students to bring their own devices to use.
