B-ball Fridays are back

The MCCC intramural basketball league began this past Friday, Sept. 26, with a school-yard draft.

MCCC students gathered in the Fitness Center gym to pick teams for the upcoming basketball league. The league takes place every Friday morning through the next seven weeks.

Karen Turner, the fitness activities coordinator for the college, is the director of the league. She encourages all of the students to come participate in in athletic activities such as the basketball league.

“This league gives students a chance to get to know each other and feel like they are a part of the college campus,” Turner said.

Turner, a fitness trainer as well, encourages all students to take part in physical exercise. Playing in the basketball league is a great way to get in a cardio workout, she points out.

One of the big upsides to the intramural league is that it is free to all MCCC students.

There are four teams in the league, with almost 30 students participating. Many of the students are in their second or third years and have played in the league in the past.

One returning student, Gabe Deal, a second-year business management student, talked about the experience of playing in the league.

“I made tons of new friends through playing competitively in a sport that I love,” Deal said.

With a group of students coming out week in and week out, eventually friendships are built through the comaraderie of competitive play.

“Playing in the league gave me something to look forward to on Fridays,” Deal said.
