MCCC employee dies in tubing accident in Texas

A Temperance resident and MCCC employee died in Texas while tubing with her family.

Janet Keck, 67, lost her life on the Guadalupe River near San Antonio on Wednesday, July 21, just after noon.

Family members told police that Keck had flipped out of her tube while passing through an area of rapids, located near the Gruene River Bridge, according to New Braunfels police.

Police said Keck was unresponsive when the family pulled her out and that they began administering CPR until the New Braunfels EMS arrived.

She was taken to Christus Santa Rosa Hospital in New Braunfels, where she was pronounced dead.

Keck has been affiliated with MCCC over the last 20 years, most recently as a part-time lab technician at the Whitman Center and weekends at the main campus.

Karen Kuhl, Computer Lab coordinator, said that Keck will be greatly missed on main campus and at Whitman.

“It was just so unexpected,” Kuhl said. “One day you go out for a great time with your family, and then it turns out to be your last.”

Dean of Business Division Paul Knollman sent an e-mail on Thursday, July 22, informing all MCCC e-mail users of this loss.

“Our condolences go out to her entire family. She will be missed,” the e-mail stated.
